img_6682This year for our annual Japanese dinner we headed towards the city to Ginza restaurant to sample some yummy Japanese cuisine. We feasted on Miso soup, Gyoza, and a selection of mains including Udon noodle soup and chicken teriyaki. Congratulations to Angas and Lexi who took away the Japanese award for excellence this year.

Thanks to parents and to everyone who attended and was brave enough to try some new foods. Big thanks to Milani Sensei for organising the dinner.

Bridge Building 2016

Congrats to our latest batch of super bridge engineers. During term 4 we designed and built our pop-stick bridges to span a divide of 40cm and withstand as much force as possible before failure. This years winner (no spoilers!) held a never before seen load of over 30kg. Thanks to everyone who participated in the day!

E-Books 2016 – Now Published

yetiDuring a busy term 4 we have been creating E-books for publishing on the online E-book store. Pairs of students were tasked with writing a narrative story that would appeal to a specific audience. She have added 11 new books to our ever growing library and hope to possibly print some of the “best-of-the-best” from the past few years for display and borrowing in the library. Books are available for students and families to download for free, students can search their own name or Hallett Cove South on the iBooks store or iTunes.

During term 4 we celebrated the 40th birthday of Hallett Cove South Primary School. We enjoyed a visit from the channel 7 chopper and crew, and hosted a celebration assembly in our room. Students created stalls and activities for visitors, there was a bouncing castle, petting zoo and even Sumo suits! Well done to the organising committee of parents, teachers and students.

Things I Know: A Poetry Podcast

During term two we explored different types of poety. Students took a famous poem called “Things I Know” by Joyce Sutphen as an example to create a unique free form poem about a topic they have unique knowledge or understanding of. We focused on using personification, repetition, alliteration, and imagery by uses the senses to build our works. Students then create podcasts using Garageband to share the readings. Some examples are attached.

Ancient World: HASS Independent Study

This term some year 7 students have been working on a depth study of the ancient world featuring Greece; Rome; India or China. They framed several questions from the Australian Curriculum that were of interest to them and found different ways of sharing their learning, including written texts, maps, powerpoint presentations, oral recounts and online resources. Iona looked at Ancient India and an example of her work via Powtoon is attached above.

Dan Meyer 3-Act Maths

The Prezi above is an example of Dan Meyer 3-act maths that we use in class regularly. Dan takes everyday occurrences and allows students to problem solve often using multi-step concepts. There are often several ways to solve these problems from using physical hands-on resources, to working conceptually. Students were able to approximate an answer for the Usain Bolt problem, but found it difficult to calculate an accurate final answer. How would you go?
